Emily Black, PMHNP-BC (she/her/hers)
Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and young adults. I am passionate about providing holistic, patient-centered care that supports each individual’s mental and emotional well-being.
My journey into healthcare began by providing respite, residential, and community living care to children and young adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. These early experiences sparked my interest in nursing and inspired my commitment to mental health care. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mercy College of Health Sciences and my Master of Science in Nursing from Briar Cliff University.
I’ve worked in both inpatient and outpatient pediatric settings, including the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a pediatric outpatient clinic. These roles deepened my interest in psychiatric care and led me to where I am today—offering comprehensive services that include medication management and supportive psychotherapy for individuals navigating anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, autism, adjustment disorders, behavioral concerns, and eating disorders.
I believe in creating a therapeutic environment where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered. I work collaboratively with families and multidisciplinary teams to develop individualized treatment plans that are rooted in evidence-based practices and tailored to the emotional, social, and developmental needs of each patient.
In addition to my core training, I’ve completed advanced education through the Neuroimmune Institute in the treatment of Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), Pediatric Long COVID, and other inflammatory brain conditions. This specialized training helps me provide compassionate, informed care to families facing complex and often misunderstood diagnoses.
I was born and raised in Iowa and feel incredibly grateful to serve the community I grew up in. I live with my husband and our two cats—Delilah, a tiny rescue, and Brim, a giant Maine Coon. Outside of work, I love spending time with friends and family, being outdoors, and traveling whenever I can. I’m a big foodie and make it a personal mission to try every new restaurant in the Des Moines Metro. I also keep a running list of must-visit restaurants around the world.
I joined Magnolia Connection in May 2025 and see clients in person at our Norwalk and Ames locations and provide services via telehealth throughout Iowa.
